Nellore: Prof. V Veeraiah, Vice-Chancellor, Vikrama Simhapuri University said that corruption is one of the major hindrances to economic growth and appealed for measures to curb it.

Inaugurating the Debate Competitions in the varsity on Saturday, referring to the progressive dynamics of the smallest of the countries in the West, he said, the curtailing graft led to the meteoric rise of these nations.

Citing Swedish example, he said that it is just the simplicity and ethical values that made such a small nation into an exemplary one.

Thota Prabhakar, DSP, Anti-Corruption Bureau, said that the laws have been stringent on the people who abuse power. He regretted that many people chose high positions and secured places in government only to amass wealth. Rule of law, one of the democratic boundaries of the constitutional framers, has to be given equal respect.

Prof. P R Sivasankar, Registrar said that it is only the innocence and apathy of the people that promotes graft menace in our country.

Turning a blind eye to corruption itself is a big sin and encouraging corruption is equally an offence as is resorting to corruption, he said.

K R Arunachalam, Deputy General Manager, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. said it is only the people’s participation that can eliminate the evil like corruption. Dr. A. Prasad, Vice-Principal, congratulated the finalists from all the colleges. Competitions such as these will test the communication, planning and leadership skills of the students. Earlier, Dr. K Narasimha Rao, Coordinator of the Programme made all those present to take a pledge to eradicate corruption.
