Stampede at cheques disbursement to SHG women
No untoward incident happened, but some women are stated to have fainted because of the stampede. The stampede is attributed to poor arrangements by DRDA and MEPMA.
Pithapuram: The programme to distribute Chandranna Pettubadi cheques among the SHG women at the TDP office here on Tuesday ended without any transaction as a virtual stampede occurred at the venue, which was not fit enough to accommodate 30,000 people.
No untoward incident happened, but some women are stated to have fainted because of the stampede. The stampede is attributed to poor arrangements by DRDA and MEPMA.
The authorities announced in villages that attendance of SHG women as compulsory. Therefore, even expectant mothers undertaking great risk travelled to the town. There are an estimated 56,544 members in 5854 groups in the constituency. A traffic jam ensued on municipal road with women blocking the road.
The irate women, complaining of lack of space, staged a sit-in dharna in front of the municipal office here. The police had to intervene to clear them. The women blamed the government for forcing them to attend the programme. The stampede occurred while distributing biscuit and water packets. Commenting on the incident, the officials clarified that only presidents and secretaries of DWCRA groups were invited to the programme.
