Tirupati: The exchange of the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes went off smoothly in the pilgrim city on Thursday. Except in some banks, the crowd turned for the exchange of notes was within the limits of the branch premises making it a rather smooth affair. Even in some of the branches where more number of people turned up including SBI main branch and Tilak road branch where the queue line of waiting customers stretched on the road outside the building was cleared by noon.

While the bank branches located away from the main city witnessed less people coming up for the exchange of notes making it an easy affair contrary to the expectations. There are about 150 bank branches of 40 banks apart from post offices where the exchange of old notes was undertaken on Thursday.

Ram Mohan, a businessman, who came along with his spouse for exchange of notes at a bank branch on KT Road, was surprised at the completion of his task within ten minutes. “I feared that I have to wait one or two hours, expecting huge crowd but was delighted to finish my task soon,” he averred.

A banker attributed the manageable turnout of people for exchange of notes to the awareness of the people knowing that the exchange of notes could be done in any bank branch and also up to December 31 this year. This saw there was no panic rush in most branches, he added. All the banks have made extra arrangements like setting up more counters and also deputing additional staff for the exchange of notes while Tirupati Urban police authorities also deputed men at the branches where heavy rush was expected to ensure the exchange of notes go on in an orderly manner.

However, people faced inconvenience in many petrol pumps where the personnel insisted on tendering the exact change for the fuel required and refused to accept Rs 500 notes. They accepted the notes if the customer agreed to take fuel for Rs 500. Despite instructions from the Revenue and Police departments, the fuel outlets continued the loot of the public on Thursday also even after the situation was improved with banks undertaking exchange of old notes and providing smaller denomination notes in the city.
