Tirupati: It is indeed surprising that the construction of the seminar halls which was taken up by Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) in 2004 is still remaining incomplete. The then Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy amidst much fanfare laid the foundation stone for the state-of-the-art Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Golden Jubilee Complex of seminar halls in the presence a host of dignitaries including Central and State Ministers on September 30, 2004. However, the works were taken up only in 2006, after a gap of two years, during the tenure of S Jayarami Reddy as Vice-Chancellor (VC) but was stopped after the completion of 60 per cent of works, leaving it remain incomplete all these years. The SVU on the occasion of its successful completion of 50 years of existence decided to take up the construction of the seminar halls with latest facilities as the existing facilities for holding any meetings or congregations found inadequate to meet its growing needs in view of expanded academic, research and social activates inthe campus.

The salient features of the complex include one big seminar hall with a seating capacity of 650, two mini-seminar halls with 300 and 250 seating capacity, meeting halls, classrooms and other facilities is mainly meant for the purpose of holding international conventions and seminars. A glance at the building plan reveals that that it is the futuristic structure aims and will be a proud one for the university to grow as major centre for international meetings in the State.

It is needless to say that the enormous delay saw the escalation of the building cost to Rs 8 crore now against its original value of Rs 3 crore, thanks to the apathy of the successive authorities including the university VCs and engineers giving a monumental example on how such negligence on the part of authorities in State-run institutions costing the exchequer dearly.

A visit to the incomplete complex in the sprawling university campus reveals the gloomy state of the structure giving a perfect example of neglect. A senior academic member lamented that anyone desires to hold a big scientific and educational congregation forced to approach private colleges as there is no adequate facilities in the SVU and cited even Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) is holding the job melas in private engineering colleges as they have facilities to conduct online exams, viva etc. while underlying the need of the completion of the construction of seminar halls.

However, University Engineering wing In-charge Director GN Pradip Kumar said that the works will resume soon. Speaking to The Hans India on Friday, he said Vice-Chancellor Avula Damodaram took up the issue of the long pending seminal halls complex immediately after he became the VC. The previous contract was terminated and the process of resuming the works was initiated, he said adding that the works will soon be taken up for the completion of complex as early as possible.
