Tirupati: The donation of the organs of a brain-dead student gave a new lease of life to four critically ill patients. M Dhananjay Reddy (18), an Intermediate student and native of Gudireddypalli in Nimmanapalli mandal was critically injured after he met with an accident at Angallu near Madanapalli on November 10. He was brought to SVIMS super specialty hospital here for treatment.

Following this, members of Jeevandaan Trust approached Dhananjay’s parents and requested them to donate their son’s organs to which the couple readily agreed, although they were submerged in grief.

Dhananjay’s father Moolinti Rami Reddy, mother Sobharani and grand-father Moolinti Ramachandra Reddy, a well-known land lord in Nimmanapalli area opined that the organ donation would be a fitting remembrance of their child. Doctors of SVIMS led by in-charge director Dr Shiva Kumar harvested the organs on Saturday.

As per the directions of Jeevandaan Trust authorities, SVIMS officials decided to donate the heart of Dhananjay to Malar Hospital, Chennai, his liver to Manipal Hospital, Vijayawada, one kidney to Narayana Hospital, Nellore and another kidney to SVIMS for transplantation.

Significantly, it is the second organ donation in SVIMS within two weeks, revealing the growing awareness on organ donation and transplantation among the general public to help critically ill patients get a new lease of life.

In the latest case, Dhananjay’s family, though traditional farmers from interior rural area of Nimmanapalli mandal came forward to donate the organs thereby reinforcing the belief that awareness on organ donation was reaching more and more people. SVIMS sources said that it was the sixth instance of organ donation at SVIMS.
