Vijayawada: The tax collection figures of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation are on the rise with the opportunity given by the government to use banned currency notes to pay municipal taxes.

The VMC collected around Rs 7.37 crore in the last three days and the amount may go up further. According to VMC Commissioner G Veera Pandian, the tax collection, including property tax, vacant land tax, water charges and sewerage charges, was Rs 93,51,361 till Sunday .

It was Rs 1,43,67,263 on November 12 and Rs 5,00,15,519 on November 11. The total amount collected in the last three days is Rs 7.37 crore. The Commissioner said tha tpeople would be allowed to pay taxes using banned notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 till November 14 midnight.

The VMC set up nine centres for collecting taxes and made special arrangements at 14 Mee Deva centrrs to pay taxes. The VMC officials said that it was a record tax collection in the history of corporation as the tax collection is between Rs 60 lakh and Rs 1 crore during normal days and it does not exceed Rs 2.50 crore on last day of March.
