​Kurnool: The Deputy Chief Minister KE Krishna Murthy thanked the Central government for sanctioning 10,000 gas connections to the district under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) scheme.

Krishna Murthy accompanied by District Collector Ch Vijay Mohan launched the PMUY scheme on Thursday and extended gas connection to the women beneficiaries. Speaking on the occasion, KEK said the Central government had decided to extend the gas connection to the families living Below Poverty Line (BPL).

As part of the scheme, the Centre has sanctioned 10,000 gas connections to the district, he added. Connections would be given after verifying Aadhaar and bank accounts of the beneficiaries, he stated.

Recalling the Deepam scheme launched by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in 1995, KEK said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is implementing a similar scheme under PMUY.

In case of any LPG related accidents, a compensation of Rs 6 lakh would be paid to the kin of the victims, he stated. District Collector Ch Vijay Mohan said extending gas connections to women was proposed by the Chief Minister during 1995 and it was an eco-friendly scheme. He said every woman who doesn’t have a connection can apply at the Tahsildar office, he stated.

An oil company area manager Meera Nair said the Central government has been implementing the PMUY scheme to provide LPG connection to every household and only woman above 18 years are eligible for it and they should be from BPL families, she stated. District Civil Supplies Officer Thippe Naik, Revenue Division Officer L Raghu Babu, managers of various oil companies, gas agencies and women beneficiaries were present.
