Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed the officials on Friday to set up Anna Canteens across the state to provide subsidised meals to the poor. The CM had earlier launched an Anna Canteen at the Andhra Pradesh Secretariat at Velagapudi to provide subsidised meals to the poor people who visit the Secretariat.

As there is a good response from the people, the Chief Minister has decided to extend the canteens to places across the State. Initially, these canteens will be set up in the towns and cities and later will be extended to mandals.

The Chief Minister conducted a review meeting with the Civil Supplies Department officials at his camp office and directed the latter to take measures to set up Anna Canteens in the State. The Anna Canteens are aimed at providing breakfast, lunch and dinner at subsidised rates to daily wage workers and to the poor people in the State.

For successful functioning of Anna Canteens, the Chief Minister also asked the officials to study ‘Amma Unavagam’ (Amma Canteens) set up by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalitaa where meals are served at subsidised rates. Chandrababu Naidu has also asked the officials to hold talks with the members of the Cabinet Sub-Committee and the Akshaya Patra Foundation on the issue.
