​Tirupati: The ten Swachh Iconic Places (SIPs) would strive to scale up the standard of upkeep, sanitation and other facilities and services in their area further to reach international standards, said Parameswaran Iyer, Secretary, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS).

Speaking to media here on Friday after the First Quarter Review Meeting (FQRM) of Swachh Iconic Places (SIPs), Iyer said that the idea behind the SIPs was to ensure clean environment and to follow the best practices with regard to management of basic facilities including drinking water supply, energy, waste management etc.

Which include religiously and historically important places in the country. Iyer said that Petroleum companies, Coal India and other PSUs were involved in the Swachh initiatives including extending the financial and technical support to the SIPs while the Centre also providing technical assistance and also acting as a troubleshooter for the SIPs to overcome any issue they face in taking up the innovative practices.

At the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, MDWS and Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) resolved to select 100 famous places historically or religiously to develop them as SIPs. They include famous religious places like Tirumala, Ajmer Sharif shrine, Kamakhya Devi Shrine, Golden Temple, Jagannath temple, Mata Vaishano Devi, Madurai Meenakshi temple, Taj Mahal, Manikarnika Ghat (Varanasi) and CST Terminal (Mumbai) while 90 more would be identified in a phased manner as SIPs for development, he explained.

In the day long meet, the representatives of SIPs shared their experiences with regard to the efficient management of the facilities and also enhancement of upkeep and maintenance, in the past three months.

They also discussed the action plan to be taken up in the next three months and also exchanged ideas for implementing them in the coming three months. He complimented the efforts of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) management in taking forward the Clean India campaign in an effective manner in various aspects.

TTD Executive Officer D Sambasiva Rao said that the TTD with the support of three PSUs including Neyveli Lignite Corporation and ONGC drawn a plan with an outlay of Rs 86 crore for development of Tirumala as a model religious centre.

The TTD has already taken up the recycling of the sewage water of about 15 MLD being discharged in Tirumala for utilising it after treatment for plants. Accordingly, the treated water is now being used for the sandalwood plantation and also maintenance of the gardens on the hills. Plans are afoot for efficient solid waste management, he added. Officer on Special Duty (SBM) Akshay Rout and others were present.
