Rajamahendravaram: Reforms would be introduced in prisons in order to change in the mindsets of inmates, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said here on Saturday. He inaugurated newly-built administrative block in the central prison here. Later, he interacted with the inmates of the prison.

Speaking on the occasion, Naidu said that it was not important to punish the prisoners and advocated for correct them in order to transform them into responsible citizens.

Stating that changes would be made in laws to prevent harsh punishments for small crimes, he suggested that inmates remove behind urge for violence and desire for revenge. He told them to exercise and take part in cultural activities during leisure time to keep their minds healthy and fresh.

Later, the Chief Minister enquired with the inmates about the crime they were sentenced for and inspected furniture and clothes made by them. He also inspected the vegetables cultivated in the open air jail.

Prisoners presented a chair specially made for the Chief Minister in which he sat for some time. Congratulating the prisoners, he made suggestions to make use of technology in making furniture.

Earlier, the Chief Minister laid foundation stone for the hospital going to be built for the prisoners in the central prison. Later, he inquired medical officers on the prevailing diseases among prisoners and suggested that the prisoner practice yoga and exercise for health.

Deputy Chief Minister N Chinarajappa, Irrigation Minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao, Rajamahendravaram MP Maganti Muralimohan, ZP chairman Namana Rambabu, Mayor Pantam Rajani Sesha Sai, Director General of Prisons, Vinay Ranjan Ray, Prisons IG Sunil Kumar, DIG Chandrasekhar, Jail superintendent Vara Prasad and medical officer Dr Sarita were present on the occasion.
