Kurnool: The Thoracic heart surgeon Dr Prabhakar Reddy performed a rare heart surgery at Kurnool Government Hospital on Monday and extended a new lease of life to an agriculture labourer, who was suffering from heart ailment. Reddy said it is the first surgery that has been performed after opening Thoracic surgery block and first-of-its-kind in the history of Rayalaseema. Addressing the media, a team of doctors, who took part in the surgery, expressed joy over the successful conduct of surgery.

Dr Reddy said Tirupal Naik (53), a native of Tanda in Guntakal of Anantapur district, was admitted in the hospital a month ago. He was suffering from heart pain besides continuous fever. He had undergone many medical examinations and doctors found to he was suffering from severe cardiac ailment. After completion of medical examinations, the doctors shifted him to Intensive Care Unit and started medication, he stated.

In view of the patient’s condition, an ‘off-pump bypass surgery’ popularly known as heart-beat surgery was performed by a team of doctors led by Dr C Prabhakar Reddy and the surgery was performed under NTR Arogya Sri Scheme. Reddy said the patient has recovered well and is going to lead a normal life once again. Prabhakar said this kind of surgery will cost nearly Rs 2 lakh at corporate hospitals whereas the entire surgery has been performed free of cost at Kurnool General Hospital with the help of latest equipment. The patient would be discharged within few weeks.
