​Amaravati: In what could be viewed as a calculated move to woo the urban voters ahead of elections in five major municipal corporations, the TD government on Wednesday rolled out a roadmap for construction of 1.2 lakh houses in various municipal towns.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu revealed this plan at a programme here on Wednesday with instructions to the official agencies concerned to complete the grounding of housing works before December with a focus on Kakinada, Nellore, Tadipathri, Chilakaluripet municipalities.

The TDP is going to face the election for the first time after it came to power held in 2014 elections in the pre-bifurcation of the State.

Therefore, the civic polls are likely to be viewed as a referendum on the performance of the Naidu government in the last two and a half years.

The government is reportedly feeling the heat of public displeasure in urban areas due to the bad condition of roads and poor quality of citizen services.

The officials from the Municipal Administration and Urban Development have explained to the CM about four model plans which are designed for the construction of houses.

The CM suggested to the officials to include maintenance component also in the building plans in view of the complaints that the houses are failing to be in a good condition soon after construction for want of proper maintenance.

The officials were asked to devise plans in such a manner that the houses will last for long. In the same breath, he said the housing cost should not cross the stipulated limits.

The CM reviewed the condition of roads in the total 110 municipalities in the State. He asked the officials to take up road repair works immediately and new roads also should be laid on a priority basis. He asked the officials to focus on beautification of urban spaces too.

Naidu wanted to hold month-wise review meetings and take stock of the progress pertaining to housing, improvement of infrastructure facilities and beautification of projects.

Municipal Minister P Narayana, Principal Secretary to CM Sateesh Chandra and other higher officials were present.
