Srikakulam: District joint Collector KVN Chakradhara Babu directed civil supplies officials to eliminate the role of middlemen and purchase paddy directly from farmers.

He was speaking at a review meeting on Thursday and asked officials to start Paddy Purchasing Centres (PPC) by December 2. The joint Collector said that bank accounts were mandatory for farmers as the money would be paid directly into their accounts thereby eliminating the role of middlemen.

He asked agriculture officials to motivate farmers to open bank accounts in their respective areas as soon as possible. District supply officer (DSO) V Subramanyam was asked to appoint five mobile teams to make surprise checks at PPCs to prevent irregularities and revenue and agriculture officials were asked to identify suitable places for setting up PPCs at locations convenient to farmers.

The Joint Collector said that after procuring paddy from farmers an SMS must be sent to farmers with the complete payment details and said the National Informatics Centre (NIC) would provide technical assistance in this regard. Millers Association president RVS Venkateswara Rao requested oficials to arrange maximum number of PPCs at Tekkali, Jalumuru and Narasannapeta.
