Guntur: The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) in association with Jindal Company will set up a 15 MW power plant with an investment of Rs 180 crore near the dumping yard at Obulunaidupalem near Guntur city. The Jindal Company will produce 15 MW power from 1200 tonnes of garbage from Guntur and Vijayawada Municipal Corporations and the surrounding seven municipalities.

An agreement has already been signed to this effect and the company would be given 15.5 acres of land on lease for this purpose. The plant is expected to become operational in the next two years. The company held an awareness meeting at Obulunaidupalem on Thursday and interacted with the villagers to clarify their doubts on the power plant. Speaking at the meeting, GMC Commissioner S Nagalakshmi said the company would ensure that the environment was not harmed in any way.

“It is the responsibility of Jindal Company to create awareness on the anti-pollution measures that would be taken up by the company and on the employment potential to the villagers because of the plant,” said MLA Venugopal Reddy.
