Amaravati: The Group of Ministers (GOM) meeting chaired by Civil Supplies Minister Paritala Sunitha decided to open 100 Anna Canteens across the State soon.

Other members of the committee are Agriculture Minister Prathipati Pulla Rao and Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana. The meeting, held at Interim Secretariat Complex at Velagapudi here on Friday, also decided to supply various verities of foods based on locations in the canteens.

Currently, only one canteen is being run at Velagapudi where idli is served at Rs 1, pongal, tomato bath, sambar rice, curd rice and lemon rice at Rs 5 each.

The GOM decided to study the introduction of meals with traditional flavors of dal, sambar, lemon rice and curd for Rs 10. Representatives of Akshayapatra Foundation agreed to the price though originally it was proposed to be Rs 13.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Civil Supplies Minister Sunitha said the government had studied and identified various locations following the instructions of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to start the canteens by conducting a survey.

Vijayawada, Visakapatnam, Srikakulam, Nellimarla, Rajam, Kakinada, Guntur, Ongole, Kandukuru, Tirupati, Kurnool, Anantapur and Hindupur have been formally selected to open canteens under first phase.

She said the one canteen now being run at Velagapudi was having 800 daily visitors for breakfast and meals. “It is costing Rs 7 lakh for month to run the canteen while Rs 4.38 lakh is earned through it. The balance Rs 2.62 lakh is being paid by the government,” she said..


Sunitha said the government was making arrangements to distribute Chadranna Kaanuka commodities in view of ensuing Christmas and Sankranti with a budget of Rs 385 crore. The officials were instructed to take ensure commodities are reached to beneficiaries without any lapses, she added.

The minister also said the government would open village malls across the State. One kilogram each of dal, sugar and oil would be supplied at fixed prices and plans were underway to implement the scheme, she added. Officials of Capital Regional Development Authority and Akshayapatra Foundation also took part in the GOM meeting.
