- Arrests, raasta roko and rallies mark the nation-wide protest in Eluru, Tanuku, Taddepalligudem and other places in the district - YSRC, Congress and Left parties staged agitation but received poor response as shops remained open

Eluru: The Opposition-sponsored protests evoked no response from the people in various parts of West Godavari district. The police arrested Left party leaders and workers in Nidadavole, Tanuku, Tadepalligudem. In Eluru, the Left parties and YSRCP organised protests separately. The Left party leaders and workers resorted to road blockade at Jutemill Centre on GNT Road in Eluru city which resulted in traffic jams and vehicles were stranded over two hours causing much inconvenience to the general public. The leaders of CPM CPI and CPI-ML New Democracy addressed the agitators and raised slogans against the demonetisation of big currency.

Whereas, Congress resorted to raasta roko in Vasantha Mahal centre on their own.

The workers-led by party City committee president Rajanala Ramamohan Rao took out a rally from Congress party office and reached Vasantha Mahal Centre and resorted to road blockade. The party leaders said tha as per the call given by the APCC, they limited the agitation to only protest rallies.

The New Democracy leaders took out a cycle rally in the town and requested the shopkeepers to down their shutters. The party district leaders U Venakteswara Rao, Kakarla Appa Rao, Yarra Srinivasa Rao, and others led the rally. The CPI and CPM workers and leaders also wandered around the shops in the city and requested the businessmen to close their business for the day. However, the shop and business establishments turned a deaf ear to the agitation.

However, banks worked normally and RTC buses were running as usual. The YSRCP workers and leaders took out a cycle rally in the city. In Tadepalligudem, the police arrested YSRCP and CPM leaders in bus stand centre following the agitation. The police shifted the leaders to the police station and after half an hour released them but there was no impact in Tadepalligudem town. In Nidadavole town, CPM-CPI leaders and workers participated in the rally from Rice Millers Hall to Railway station centre.

The CPI leader Rekha Bhaskara Rao led the agitation and burnt the effigy of Central government at Railway station centre. The CPM leaders also took out rally in the town. However, police took 60 workers of both parties into their custody. The workers took out bike rally led by YSRCP State Secretary S Rajiv Krishna in the town. The Police arrested 15 CPM workers, 35 CPI workers.

Similarly, in Jangareddigudem, the YSRCP and Left parties staged a dharna at Bus Stand in the morning. The police intervened and arrested the Left and YSRCP workers. Followed by Tanuku, where police arrested former MLA and YSRCP leader Karumuri Nageswara Rao and Left party leaders while they tried to squat on the roads.
