Visakhapatnam: Amidst cheers from hundreds of police personnel, Home Minister N Chinarajappa on Monday inaugurated the 65th All India Police Volleyball Cluster (volleyball, basketball, handball and yoga) Championship-2016 at Port Stadium.

Over 2,400 sportspersons from police force belonging to 37 States and central force from all over the country are taking part in the championship. The police games are being held in the State after a gap of 12 years.

Speaking at the occasion, the Home Minister said that police personnel have been brining laurels to country by clinching medals in various international sporting events. “Organising these cluster games in City of Destiny is indeed a matter of great joy for the AP Police as these competitions help in unearthing talent,” Chinarajappa said.

He said after the State was divided, most of the events are taking place in Visakhapatnam. “Partnership Summit, International Fleet Review and many other international events were held during the last two and half years. Now the city is also becoming a hub for sports activities, both national and International. The championship will conclude on December 2,” he added.

DGP N Sambasiva Rao said it was proud moment for the Vizag city and the State to host police games.

The volleyball completions will be held at Port Indoor Stadium while GVMC Indira Priyadarshini Stadium will host handball competitions, Andhra University’s Yoga Village is the venue for Yoga competitions and basketball will be played at Gitam University, Andhra University, Sri Prakash School and ZPH School located at Chandranapalem in the city.

Earlier the Home Minister handed over the torch to the athletes before announcing the opening of the games. Police band, cultural programmes and adventure feats by the police personnel from different States enthralled the visitors.

Panchayat Raj Minister Ch Ayyanna Patrudu, local MLAs and District collector Pravin Kumar were present.
