Nellore: The bandh call given by the Left parties, Congress and YSRCP in protest against the demonetisation move of the Centre evoked a mixed response in the city on Monday. Private educational institutions and commercial establishments were closed voluntarily and English examination of third semester of Vikrama Simhapuri University scheduled to be held on Monday was postponed Dec 21.

The Left parties organised protests at various places across the district and protesters obstructed the movement of RTC buses in many mandals. They organised a huge rally from Ayyappa temple to the statue of Babu Jagjivan Ram at Vedayapalem centre in the city and held a rasta roko there. Left parties also organised protests in front of RTC bus depots in various mandals.

CPI (M) Nellore rural secretary Madala Venkateswarlu said the union government had devalued higher denomination like Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 500 and introduced Rs 2,000 currency notes which would give more scope for black money. He demanded that the Prime Minister make arrangements for issue of Rs 500, Rs 100 and Rs 50 notes, at banks and ATMs, keeping in mind the distress that the 130 crore population of the nation was being subjected to. He also demanded that the Centre scrap the Rs 2,000 currency immediately.CPM leaders organised a protest movement on the national highway disrupting movement of vehicular traffic.

Further, congress party leaders took out a rally from Indira Bhavan to Gandhi statue on Trunk Road which was organized by the DCC president DR P Krishnaiah. Speaking on the occasion, former Union Minister P Lakshmi said working class and middle class people were facing difficulties waiting at banks and ATMs for small notes because of demonetisation. DCC President P Krishnaiah said the BJP government had failed to bring back black money from many nations as assured by the Prime Minister.

PCC coopted member CV Sesha Reddy, PCC vice president Ch Devakumar Reddy, PCC general secretary P Chenchal Babu Yadav, and others were present.YSRCP leaders also organised protests in many mandals. Legislators N Prasanna Kumar Reddy organized the demonstrations in Kovur and M Chandrasekhar Reddy in Udayagiri on Monday. Police took some leaders in Atmakur into custody in connection with the protests.
