Vijayawada: DPS World School 30th Sub-Junior National Badminton Tournament was inaugurated at the Dandamudi Rajagopala Rao Municipal Corporation (DRRMC) Stadium in the city on Thursday. The matches will begin from Friday onwards at the DRRMC, Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala Indoor Stadium and Vijayawada Club Indoor stadiaum.

Speaking on the occasion, Sports Minister Atchannaidu said that the government would construct international standard stadia in the capital city Amaravati. He said that the earlier government has not conducted even single sports event, he reminded. The government would give utmost priority to sports and games in the State, he added.

Badminton National coach P Gopichand suggested to the players not to demoralise when they get defeated as it’s a stepping stone for victory. The government encouraged sports and allotted huge budget for creating infrastructure, he said.Olympic badminton silver medalist P V Sindhu said that parents should encourage their children in sports.

“My parents gave highest priority to sports, hence, I won the Olympic silver medal in badminton.” she pointed out.Andhra Pradesh Badminton Association (APBA) president and Rajya Sabha Member T G Venkatesh, DPS World School chairman Narayana, Managing Director Kumara Swamy, Badminton Association of India (BAI) secretary (tournaments) Kch Punnaiah Chowdary and others participated in the inaugural function.
