Kurnool: Members of the families displaced by the Gorakallu reservoir staged a protest in front of the Collectorate here on Thursday, demanding rehabilitation.

The YSRCP and CPM have extended support to the displaced families. The villagers tried to barge into the Collectorate but the police foiled their attempt.

Addressing the members of the displaced families, YSRCP Panyam MLA Gowru Charitha Reddy said that Gorakallu reservoir was constructed at a cost of Rs 420 crore by acquiring 1700 acres of land to store 12.5 tmcft of water. Till now, 90 per cent of works have been completed but the storage capacity is only 2.5 tmcft, the MLA alleged.

The Panyam MLA stated that displaced families are residing near the dam as the government failed to provide houses to them. She said that 17 houses had already collapsed and another 70 houses are on the verge of collapse as water is gushing out the earth. She said that the issue was brought to the notice of officials concerned four months ago but there was no response.

She alleged that the reservoir bunds have shrunk by 30 metres which depicts the gross negligence of the contractors. She demanded the district officials and ruling party leaders to provide rehabilitation for displaced under the Rehabilitation and Resettlement (RR) Act.

CPM State leader M Shadrak said the villagers of Gorakallu are spending sleepless nights as the water is gushing out of the earth. The problem was taken to the notice of the Collector, Joint Collector and irrigation officials but none of them has put efforts to sort out the issue, he alleged. He said the government had acquired the lands of poor by paying a nominal amount of Rs 60,000 per acre.

“After handing over their lands to the government, the members of the displaced families have turned into daily-wage earners. Some of them have migrated to other villages in search of livelihood,” he added. He demanded that the government should pay compensation of Rs 6 to 8 lakh per acre as per the existing land cost besides implementing RR package. AIDWA leader Nirmalamma urged the Collector, Joint Collector to pursue the issue by visiting the
village.
