Kadapa: A festive spirit descended on the city with lakhs of Christians began celebrating advent season. The churches including ancient ones in the city were illuminated with colourful lights and songs praising Lord Jesus Christ. In this holy month, devotees visit houses with carol singing by playing musical instruments.

Mariyapuram Roman Catholic Church father Sagili Prakash said that carol singing is the most significant event during the season of the advent. The Christians believe that Lord Jesus Christ would bless them with health and wealth if they praise him during carol singing, he added. Cutting across cast and creed, people participate in carol singing remembering Lord Jesus Christ came to earth in the form of a man and sacrificed his life for the sins of the world. The Christmas celebrations would continue till the first week of January.

The city is famous for churches including 125-year-old church and CSI Central Church. The 30-year-old Roman Catholic Church at Mariyapuram was symbolically constructed to promote communal harmony between religions. Recently, Siluva Margam was constructed with 14 structures including 15-feet memorial in the church premises. Hundreds of devotees throng to church every day and offer special prayers. Christians in the city believe that taking baptism during the month of December as auspicious.
