Kakinada: The spiking of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes affected a wedding which is to be held on December 8.

An alliance was finalised between bride from Nadakuduru village in Karapa mandal in East Godavari and groom from Kakinada in the first week of November. The bride’s parents agreed to pay Rs 30 lakh as dowry besides other formalities.

Accordingly Rs 8 lakh was paid before demonetisation move, which came to force on November 8. The muhurat was fixed for December 8 and in the meanwhile, the groom’s parents not only demanded payment of the remaining balance of Rs 22 lakh cash in new currency but also asked for the exchange of the already paid Rs 8 lakh in new notes.

As the bride’s parents expressed their inability to pay the agreed amount in new notes, with availability of cash to the tune of Rs 30 lakh a distant possibility, the groom’s parents are not willing to go ahead with the wedding on December 8.

The efforts of the elders in the village to make the groom’s parents to agree to accept the dowry in instalments went in vain.

Meanwhile, Andhra Bank DGM, P Bhaskara Rao said that as per the directives of the Central government we are releasing Rs 2.5 lakh for marriages subject to availabity of cash and on producing of proof by marriage parties.
