Students and sportsmen have been finding it difficult to walk and run on the track in the MBS due to potholes and waste material on the track. Business people are using the stadia as commercial centres for selling their products in playgrounds and they are spoiling students\' and parents\' dreams for their business purpose at stadium.
Vijayawada: Morning walkers, sportsmen and women are unhappy with facilities at the Makineni Basavapunnyya Stadium (MBS) as the stadium was ravaged as it was used for commercial purpose during the Krishna Pushkaralu.
Students and sportsmen have been finding it difficult to walk and run on the track in the MBS due to potholes and waste material on the track. Business people are using the stadia as commercial centres for selling their products in playgrounds and they are spoiling students' and parents' dreams for their business purpose at stadium.
One of the walkers Harshavardhan said that senior citizens, women, sportsmen and defence job aspirants are unable to practice at the MBS Stadium due to unhygienic conditions.
He also said that nearly 300 students and public are coming to the MBS Stadium every day to jog for fitness, but VMC has not allotted sufficient funds to stadium for developing infrastructure.
“Due to lack of infrastructure and commercial activities in the ground, students are preferring to practice on the highways for the defence and police recruitment. One of the students had died in the accident, while he was running on the main road due to lack of space at the stadium in the past,” he added.
MBS gym coach Srinivas said that youngsters are unhappy with outdated equipment at the gym and the gym building was also in a bad condition, he said.
Hockey coach Rajashekar said that school and college students have shown interest to participate in the regional and national hockey competitions, but the State government did not giving priority to the sports in the stadium, “State government focused only on income than sports in the stadiums, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials not informed about commercial activities in the ground to the coaches and others, sports students were facing turbulence to practice at ground due to commercial activities in the ground,” he added.
One of the senior citizens A Sankara Rao said that VMC failed to provide street lights, toilets for women, rest rooms at the MBS. “The VMC officials broke the MBS entrance gates during Krishna Pushkaralu, but they failed to repair them. Anti-social elements are entering the stadium due to lack of security system,” he said.
