AP Govt urged to increase sports quota from 2 to 5 per cent
Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) has decided to urge the State government to increase reservation from two per cent to 5 per cent to sportspersons during recruitment in different government departments in the State.
Vijayawada: Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) has decided to urge the State government to increase reservation from two per cent to 5 per cent to sportspersons during recruitment in different government departments in the State.
It also decided to appeal to the State government to allocate funds in the annual budget for the development and promotion of sports from the grassroot level.
The SAAP conducted a meeting on Wednesday with the stakeholders and discussed the ways and means for development of sports in Andhra Pradesh.
Addressing media conference at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium here on Wednesday, SAAP chairman P Mohan said the State government is formulating new sports policy and taking suggestions from all stake holders.
The stakeholders include government officials, eminent sportspersons, players and representatives of various sports Associations.
J Srinivas, Secretary to the State government, L V Subramanyam, IAS Officer, Andhra Cricket Association secretary and Narasapuram MP Gokaraju Gangaraju, chess player Koneru Hampi and several others attended the three- hour meeting.
Later, the SAAP chairman said that the stakeholders meeting opined that GO 84 which was released in 2000 earmarking two per cent reservations to sportsmen in government jobs was grossly neglected in the State for many years.
He said the participants in the meeting suggested that the sports quota in government jobs in Andhra Pradesh should be raised from two per cent to five per cent.
He said the meeting has decided to submit a representation to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu asking the latter to allocate budget every year for the development and promotion of sports.
He said the stakeholders also sought development of infrastructure facilities in the State to promote sports and games.
Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh vice-chairman Bangar Raju said the government is sanctioning only Rs 3,000 for sports to each government degree college in the State in a year.
He felt the amount was inadequate to buy sports equipment and develop sports in the degree colleges.
He said the SAAP has invited suggestions from other sports experts for the development of sports in the State. He emphasised the need for development of sports at primary level, middle level and the highest level.
He said the officials from the Department of Secondary Education, Police, Panchayat Raj and other departments who attended the meeting expressed their desire to develop sports in Andhra Pradesh.
