Vijayawada: Outsourcing of sanitation to private agencies has sparked protests from the existing outsourcing employees of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC).

The State government is introducing the private agencies for sanitation works under the GO No 279.

YSRCP leader Punyaseela demanded that the State government grant Rs 12,000 salary to the sweepers and Rs 15,000 for workers in the municipal corporation as per the GO No. 151 and Rs 4,000 to the school sweepers and watchmen as per the GO No. 193.

Municipal Workers Union osecretary Garlapati Lakshmi said that State government removed municipal workers transfer cards for implementing the GO NO 279 in the State and demanded regularisation of outsourcing employees who completed five years service in all the municipalities.

She stated that the State government is planning to privatise the municipal works through the GO No 279.

“Municipal workers would lose their identity and rights under the private contractors in all the municipalities and corporations if the government would allot municipal works to the private agencies and they will not offer existing salaries to the works,” she pointed out.

VMC Chief Medical Officer of Health M Gopi Nayak said that the State government is satisfied with sanitary works due lack of accountability and responsibility among workers.

Hence, the government has decided to strengthen the sanitary works in the State in the all municipalities and corporations. “The GO No 279 will make accountability and 100 per cent responsibility among sanitary workers and alleged that the contract workers were working only for two to three hours,” he added.
