Chittoor: Against the TTD rules and regulations, the Kalyana Mandapam in Chittoor is being used for activities not in consonance with the objectives of the TTD. The Kalyana Mandapam in Chittoor was constructed more than two decades ago.

However, it has not been getting patronage from the public as the facilities at the Mandapam are said to be quite meagre and insufficient for hosting marriages and spiritual events. As a result, the Mandapam had become a white elephant for the TTD. In order to offset this problem, the venue is being let out for handicraft exhibitions which pay quite handsomely. But against the prescribed regulations and code of ethics of the TTD, footwear and leather products are being sold on the premises of the Mandapam, which is hurting the sentiments of the majority community. The organisers of the handicraft exhibition have been allowed permission to sell footwear at the venue. Responding on this, Subhashini, manager of the Mandapam admitted that selling footwear at TTD Kalyana Mandapams was strictly prohibited.

She said that instructions have been given to evict the footwear shop on the premises of the Mandapam with immediate effect. “Suitable action would be taken against the organiser of the Handicrafts exhibition. No one has brought the matter to my notice. I assure that such a mistake would not be repeated again,” said Subhashini. She said it had become inevitable for entertaining such exhibitions at the Mandapam as people were not showing interest in hiring the venue for marriages. Incidentally, the Mandapam charges only Rs 6,000 for a marriage function whereas private venues collect more than Rs 60,000 for the same.

“We are aware of the situation and working towards creating maximum facilities at the Mandapam,” said Subhashini. She reite rated that there was no question of letting out the venue for activities against the rules of the TTD.
