GITAM Science Utsav-2016 begins

Visakhapatnam: GITAM University Institute of Science started a new initiative GITAM Science Utsav-2016 which was inaugurated here on Wednesday at GITAM Institute of Science by noted scientist and Institute of Science principal Prof K Arunalakshmi.
Addressing the students, she briefed about various schemes offered by the department of science and technology, department of biotechnology. She said that the institute is actively involved in science research and offering innovative programmes. She informed that GITAM University has recognised as Scientific Industrial Research Organisation by the Centre and world reputed organisations like Indian Institute of Chemical Technology and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre jointly working with the institute. She advised the students to concentrate on new research areas to reach their goals.
As a part the science festival, the institute of science organised a two-day student workshop on ‘Techniques in health, disease and environmental monitoring’. The biochemistry and bioinformatics departments have given hands-on training to students from different degree colleges, Visakhapatnam on ‘HPLC analysis of drugs, screening of anti-cancer drugs using MTT assay, study on the effect of anti-cancer drugs on viability of breast cancer cells and protein modelling to understand the structure-functional relationship in diseases’.
Nearly, 120 students from various degree colleges in and around Visakhapatnam actively participated in this workshop. The environmental science department faculty conducted scientific demonstration of water quality analysis, pollution
testing.
