Nellore: District Congress Committee President Dr P Krishnaiah demanded that the State government construct a permanent over bridge on escape channel to Buckingham canal in Kota mandal for preventing flood damages.

He visited Govindapalli and attached Palli Palem fishermen villages on Wednesday and said the escape channel between Govindapalli and Govindapalli Palem had been creating difficulties to people every year during heavy rains and floods. He also visited cyclone affected villages in the mandal and observed first hand, the plight of the people due to the cyclone. He said every year, the channel got damaged and people had to rely on catamarans to cross the canal.

An over bridge would be a great convenient to the villagers for crossing the canal, said Krishnaiah.

He contacted the Assistant Engineer concerned and Divisional Engineer for a solution. He explained that the villagers were not venturing into sea for fishing and their livelihood was highly affected with the problem.

Officials said they would submit proposals to the government for the bridge. Fishermen also appealed to the congress leader to mount pressure on the State government for regular relief during ban on fishing in the Bay.

PCC BC Cell vice president U Balakrishnaiah, congress block president D Madhusudan Reddy, Minority Cell district president Jahangir, Vakadu mandal party president D Surendra Reddy, and others were present.
