Visakhapatnam: Chief Justice of India Justice T.S Thakur urged the law students to practice legal profession and not to get tempted by high salary paying corporate law firms.

Addressing the students at the 2nd and the 3rd convocations of Damodara Sanjeevayya National Law University at Kalavani Port Auditorium here on Saturday, justice Thakur said that he came to learn that most of the parents check the placement percentage of the law institutions before admitting their children into the law colleges. They should understand that lawyers are not meant for jobs.

“Don’t work for others, get into legal profession. You can make money, earn reputation and also turn into a free thinker. There is also need of good lawyers in our courts. New types of suits have proliferated over the years like cyber law, consumer law unlike earlier days,” Justice Thakur said.

Narrating his own experience, he said the law course was one of the most neglected and the students who failed to get into technical courses finally joined in the law courses as the last option. Also there were no classrooms for the law students.

The situation has completely changed. Now younger generation is giving first preference to the law courses. From 18 national law universities, 2000 graduates were coming out every year and 58,000 graduates from other law colleges in the country, he added.
He said national law universities must be upgraded into centres of excellence to provide research so that the students do not look up to west for studies by paying more money.

The CJI praised Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for his support and cooperation for the DSNLU. The Chief Minister urged the Chief Justice to extend his support in converting the State capital into a justice city as the government planned to establish all the law departments including the High Court, District Court and Law Academy in a single complex.

The Chancellor of the University and Acting Chief Justice of High Court Ramesh Ranganathan presented the law degrees to 92 graduates - 85 LLB, 4 LLM and three LLD.The Chief Minister and the Chief Justice of India presented 20 gold medals to the meritorious students.
