CP BROWN LANGUAGE RESEARCH CENTRE

Kadapa: The digitisation of books and manuscripts at CP Brown Language Research Centre is yet to be taken up by the State government. According to official sources, the centre has about 66,050 books.

It includes 40,000 books in Telugu; 20,000 in English; 5,000 in Hindi; 500 in Sanskrit; 250 in Kannada; 250 Tamil and 50 in Urdu.

The ancient palm leaf manuscripts at the centre were carefully secured in the shelves after cleaning them through Smooth Brush Procedure which meant for preventing bacterial and fungus infections.

According to the historical information, one British national called CP Brown popularly known as Charles Phillip Brown had joined as Assistant Collector for Kadapa district in 1817. He developed keen interest in Telugu language.

He learnt Telugu from pandits like Tippabhatla Venkatasivasastri and Advaita Brahmasastri. After securing command over Telugu language, Brown wrote several books on Telugu grammar and learning materials for English people, who were interested in learning Telugu. He encouraged several writers by providing financial assistance for conducting research on Telugu Language.

Writers called the CP Brown period as golden age for Telugu language. Being an English man, Brown sacrificed his whole life for the restoration of Telugu Language.

In 1986, the then Collector Hari laid foundation for the construction of research centre. The centre was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu in 1995.
