Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Sangham president P Ramachandraiah said that farmers were facing in getting MSP for their paddy crop.

  • AP Rythu Sangham accuses State government of failing to keep its promise of providing support price for paddy, driving farmers into the arms of touts
  • Says no effective steps are being taken to mitigate the plight of farmers by arranging loans and inputs for rabi in the wake of demonetisation
  • Sangham will organize a rally and public meeting in Vijayawada tomorrow

Ramachandraiah said failed to keep its promise to provide MSP and farmers were not able to sell their crop to paddy purchasing centres and were pushed into the arms of middlemen. He also said that banks in rural areas had not sanctioned loans to farmers for rabi season to meet seed, fertilisers and other expenses.

Farmers of tomato, onion and other crops were denied prices which cover their costs, he said and demanded that the government take alternative steps for giving relief to farmers, who were facing severe problems with demonetisation of high value notes.

Sangham general secretary K V V Prasad said that State government had confined itself to mere announcements on draught-prone mandals without taking adequate relief measures. Farmers had to migrate to other States from Rayalaseema and north coastal districts seeking livelihood due to absence of relief measures by the State government, he alleged.

He wanted the government to ensure that all the pending irrigation projects in Rayalaseema region completed in time. Prasad demanded the government that compensation to displaced farmers and people under Polavaram major irrigation project be as per guidelines of 2013 Land Acquisition Act.

He also wanted Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to take initiative to solve the problems of farmers, who were parting with their lands for the construction of Chintalapudi lift irrigation scheme. The farmers’ leaders said that Rythu Sangham successfully completed the ‘Rythu Rakshna Yatra’ in 13 districts in the State between December 10 and 17.

Sangham would conduct a rally from Tummallapalli Kalakshetram to Alankar Centre in the city on December 20 and a public meeting would be held at Dharna Chowk (Alankar centre) from 2pm, they said. The meeting would demand the government to implement M S Swaminathan Committee recommendations and provide MSP to various crops.
