Srikakulam: Advocates belonging to Srikakulam district Bar Association demanded the cancellation of the proposed nuclear power plant (NPP) at Kovvada village in Ranastalam mandal. They submitted a memorandum to joint collector P Rajanikantha Rao during grievances cell at the Collectorate on Monday under the aegis of the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and All India Lawyers Union (AILU).

Speaking on the occasion, AILU representatives, D Ramana Rao, B Mohan Rao and Ch Lakshman Rao took strong objections to setting up the power plant at Kovvada and said the nuclear plant would pose a serious threat to the lives of the people of North Coastal AP and marine living resources as well. They said that the Central and State governments were proposing such dangerous projects merely to appease the developed world.

CITU district secretary D Govinda Rao suggested that the government produce power by using alternative resources like, wind, tidal, coal, solar energy etc and cancel hazardous projects like NPP. After experiencing the dangers due to nuclear energy, all western and European countries had been closing their units gradually but we are adopting the same here which is irresponsible on the part of our governments, said the leaders. They submitted a memorandum to the joint collector in this regard.
