Vijayawada: The 33 kv electrical sub-station built to supply power to the residents of YSR Colony in Jakkampudi village in the outskirts of Vijayawada city has no use for the residents. Although more than 70 percent works had been completed, the contractor had stopped the remaining work two years ago due to not payment of pending bills worth Rs 30 lakh by Vijayawada Municipal Corporation.

Due to non- completion of works, the electricity department is supplying power to Jakkampudi YSR Colony from Nunna Power Station, which is located about 15 km from Jakkampudi colony.

The residents of Jakkampudi colony are asking the VMC to complete the sub-station works so that uninterrupted power supply would become possible to about 4000 families living in the colony. Due to overload, there are regular interruptions in the present supply.

The sub-station construction works had started four years ago. The local residents are using the sub-station for drying clothes.

So far, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation had spent Rs1.20 crore for the construction of electrical sub-station under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) funds. The colony is a part of Mylavaram Assembly constituency which is represented by Irrigation Minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao. He had recently instructed the officials to complete the pending works but his instructions have apparently fallen on deaf ears.

There are nearly 4,000 electrical house connections in the colony. Supplying power to these houses from Nunna sub-station is a huge task. The power lines should pass at least six other villages from Nunna to Jakkampudi. Speaking to The Hans India, Executive Engineer of VMC, V Srinivasa Rao, said the pending works were going on swiftly and supply to the 33kv sub-station would definitely begin in the coming month. He said efforts were on to handover the sub-station to Electricity department. On his part, Electricity department Nunna section Engineer Venkata Raju said the department had not charged the sub-station due to pending power line works. He said the department was ready to give power supply once the lines work was completed.
