Kurnool: Suicide rate among the youth, particularly among students has been on the rise in the recent past. On an average, 10 students are ending their lives every academic year in the district due to various reasons. In the past few days, five to eight students have killed themselves. Even as the news regarding suicide of a first year engineering student from Rajeev Gandhi Memorial Engineering College (RGMEC) in Panyam lingers in the minds of many, two more youngsters took the extreme step in the city on the very next day.

According to the sources from the Police department, at least 552 suicide cases have been reported from different parts of the district from January to November this year. Of them, the count of students and youth death works out to 40 per cent and the remaining are elderly people, housewives and farmers. It has been observed that around 427 suicide cases were reported in 2013 and the figure has abnormally went up to 745 in 2014 and drastically dropped to 668 in 2015.

The main reasons that are driving the youth to end lives are loneliness, academic pressure, ragging, jealousy, nuclear families, worry about failures and social media.

The police also found that smart phones, internet and social networking sites are also stated to be the reason that is exerting peer pressure which, in turn is driving students to resort to such extreme step in case of failures. The city based psychologist NB Sudhakar Reddy stated that students are taking extreme step due to peer pressure and desire to excel in competition. Despite many colleges boasting of anti-ragging committees, ragging continues unabated due to lack of effective monitoring. Regular interaction between faculty and students can help eliminate the stress among the youth to a great extent and curb such illegal activities, he added.
