Nellore: Irregularities in execution of developmental works and lack of effective supervision of the same is defeating the purpose of Sachin Tendulkar’s adopted Puttamraju Kandriga village in the district to put it on road to development. The legendary cricketer granted funds under the MPLADS.

The village, where development works were initiated at a cost of Rs 4 crore, was completely transformed with development of drainages, construction of a community hall, development of pucca roads and so on.

Highlights:

  • The cricket legend adopted village witnessed transformation with the development of drainages, community hall and pucca roads
  • On the flip side, shoddy construction led to the stadium wall developing cracks and was pulled down during rains
  • Villagers allege that the negligent contractor who has connections with politicians is doing his work without any responsibility

The village has round-the-clock power supply and a stadium with boundary walls. Besides, sewing machines were distributed to self-help groups’ women.

The village was hailed for providing livelihood and self-employment. This is only one side of the coin. On the flipside, corruption and dereliction of duty at every step is alleged in development works’ execution.

The projects which were supposed to serve the community for a long time are developing snags prior to their inauguration.

A part of the compound wall of the stadium developed cracks prior to its inauguration by Sachin Tendulkar. The recent showers pulled down a part of the wall. The other part is vulnerable to collapse any moment.

The site on the eastern side of the stadium, built at a cost of Rs 80 lakh, was uneven. The contractor is required to increase the height of the foundation on the eastern side by placing more stones to fortify the wall.

But, he allegedly carried out the task rather mechanically just placing a few stones. The quality of the walls was said to be very poor. On the eastern side, there is a tank.

The villagers are apprehensive to walk beside the compound wall to go to the tank. Works executed for development of drainages, roads, underground drainage through sub-contracting the work by the main contractor were said to be of inferior quality. The works were executed at a cost of Rs 89 lakh, but fall short in quality.

The sub-contractor, apparently having connections with well-placed officials and political leaders, is accused of giving a go-by to the quality norms in execution of works.

The villagers are underlining the need for authorities to go into the extent of corruption alleged to have taken place in the works’ execution.

The officials supervising the execution should take steps to ensure that the development works are not just a one-day wonder.
