Amalapuram: Villagers of S Yanam on Monday staged protest in front of Ravva Oil Field managed by Cairn Energy alleging that it was polluting the environment. They staged a sit-in on the road and raised slogans against the company.

They said the pollution has been causing diseases to the villagers and said that their farms were polluted and had to turn them to fish ponds or leave them barren, which is resulting in unemployment. They demanded Cairn Energy to provide employment along with the compensation of Rs 5,000 till the company provides employment. They wanted health insurance cards for all the villagers. CPM leaders supported the protest. Local tahsildar S Subbarao assured protesters that he would their demands to the notice of the government. However, the protesters did not relent.

The protesters at one stage entered into a wordy duel with Amalapuram circle inspector Deva Kumar. The police dispersed the crowds and took some of protesters into custody and lodged them at Amalapuram Taluk police station. DSP L Ankaiah visited the village and reviewed the situation.
