According to official records, there are 50 Anganwadi centres in the town and each with strength of 30-40 children. When the HMTV correspondent visited the centres, not more than 15 children in any Anganwadi centre were found.

As per the rules, the centres should provide nutritious lunch to the children, pregnant and lactating mothers. The centres are required to give four eggs per week to children and five to the elders and should function from 9 am to 4 pm daily.

The records say that each centre has an Anganwadi worker and a helper. Only the helper (ayah) single handedly running the show at the field-level. The Anganwadi teacher is not to be seen anywhere.

The teacher now and then visits the centre and updates the records. In slums and colonies in the outskirts, the centres are erratic in functioning and locals complain that they remain closed for many days.

In fact, the Anganwadis are run till afternoon in spite of the rules specify that they should be open till 4 pm. Mary, a mother belonging to G Kottala, told The Hans India that the Anganwadi centres are not getting opened till afternoon. In fact, they should be opened in the morning.

The mothers are apprehensive of leaving the children near the Anganwadi centres and allow them to play on roads till they are opened. In the CITU colony, an Anganwadi centre did not open for a period of three days.

Municipal chairman Aparna expressed her concern at corruption going on in the Anganwadi centres. The officials are apathetic to inspect the functioning of the kendras.

The matter was taken to the notice of higher authorities. The civic chief said that she along with the civic authorities would rectify the lacunae.

When The Hans India tried to contact Anganwadi supervisor Leelavati, she refused to elaborate but said that there were minor omissions and commissions. She along with other staff members are forging ahead rectifying the mistakes.
