Explaining the merits of the new black gram variety, Prashanthi pointed out its’ yield was much higher than other varieties. “TBG 104  performed well in minikit trials (2014-15) and gave 11.8% more yield,”  she said adding that average yield of this variety under normal conditions will be 17-18 quintals per hectare, which is more than the existing ones like LBG 752, LBG 623, LBG 645 and PU 31. Regional Agriculture Research Station (RARS), Tirupati, has released a new variety of black gram `Tirupati Minumulu’ which is superior to the existing varieties in terms of yield. Keeping in view the heavy demand for pulses, specifically black gram, RARS introduced this variety i.e., TBG 104 (Parentage : PU 19 X LBG 623) to induce the farmers take up the pulse crop which would enable them earn more revenues and also to increase its production to tide over the shortage in essential pulses. According to L Prashanthi, Principal Scientist, Plant Breeding, and Bhaskar Reddy, Plant Pathologist, RARS, Tirupati, TBG 104 was tested for its superiority and found to be better than existing varieties in many aspects like yield, pest and disease resistance, climate suitability and other characteristics.

Prashanthi informed that the new variety also gave 16.4% yield advantage over LBG 752 and 26.7% over LBG 645 in AICRP trials conducted during 2015 (Rabi) in Southern Zone.

She further pointed out that since the variety is `Photo insensitive’ and suitable for all seasons, the farmers can take up the crop during any period. Its’ resistance against `Yellow Mosaic Variety disease caused by white fly which is a vector, is another advantage. Because of this resistance, spraying of insecticides can be avoided which also means reduction in expenditure for farmers on pest control. The crop duration is medium duration (75-80 days), the farmers get the produce in less than three months.

RARS scientists (extension) Kadiri Mohan and Murali Krishna (Entomologist) said that since crop area has now expanded in parts of Nellore, Kadapa and Chittoor district where farmers in Nagari, Puttur, Sriklahathi and other areas have started cultivating the pulses, introducing the new variety will boost black gram cultivation and production in the days to come.
