Tirupati: The paintings by the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati depicting Hindu gods, goddesses and mythological events, in the city, kicked up a row with the Republican Party of India (RPI) objecting to the same. In a press release issued on Sunday, RPI State president P Anjaiah said that the paintings being restricted only to Hindu gods and goddess was against the secular ethos and spirit of our Constitution while the painting which features a scene from the epic Mahabharata in which Lord Krishna comes to the rescue of Draupadi while Dushasana is trying to disrobe her in the Kourava Sabha, was undesirable as it may send a wrong message to youth.

He wanted the MCT to project literary figures, social reformers from all sections and also message- oriented paintings. It is pertinent to note that the MCT in sync with the status of Tirupati as famous Hindu pilgrim centre took up the paintings on the walls of State-run institutions on some select arterial roads to add to the spiritual ambience of the city, as part of a beautification project.
