Vizianagaram: Food safety department employees conducted raids on jaggery wholesale traders here on Sunday. Recently, District Collector Vivek Yadav received complaints stating that some manufacturers are using chemicals which are hazardous to health while making jaggery. Later, he directed the authorities concerned to take action against the traders. Based on the directive, food inspector G A B Nandaji and his staff raided wholesale shops.

They have taken the samples from 20 shops. Later, Nandaji said that jaggery manufacturers are using chemicals to eliminate impurities. But using of those chemicals is prohibited by the government. The manufacturers should use the ingredients or food preservatives which are not hazardous to health. “We will send these samples to our laboratory in Hyderabad and after receiving report, we will take action against those traders,” he said.
