Kakinada: The Panchayat Raj Department in association with NREDCAP ( New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of AP) has embarked on replacement of rural street lighting with LED lamps. As part of Panchayat Raj Department’s move, LED (light emitting diode) lamps would be installed across the State.

It is expected that LEDs have the capacity to save power consumption in a big way in the rural sector. LEDs will be provided by the government at free of cost and will not cause any financial burden to the proposed panchayats.

East Godavari district has been selected to implement the new project on a pilot basis. Out of 1110 villages in the district, 61 panchayats have been earmarked on the basis one village each for every mandal, at an awareness meet organised with respective sarpanches at Rajamahendravaram on Dec 9. Both Panchayat Raj Commissioner B Ramanjaneyulu and NREDCAP Managing Director M. Kamalakar Babu attended the awareness meeting. Besides, representatives from all the 61 panchayats took part in the meeting.

Some of the villages selected under this pilot programme are - Y Ramavaram, Agency Gangavaram, Nellipaka, Devipatnam, , Maredumilli, Kunavaram, Addateegala and Chintur.

According to East Godavaari NREDCAP District Manager G Satyanarayana, the existing street lighting system will be replaced with LED lamps district-wise. In the subsequent phases, the installation will be complete in the remaining 1,016 panchayats in the district, DM clarified.
