Visakhapatnam: Joint Collector G Srujana called upon the people to utilise other modes like social media, call centres, Help Lines, Mee Seva Centres and Prajavani to resolve their problems as the courts are not the only resort to redress the consumer problems.

Addressing a meeting organised to mark the National Consumers’ Day, Srujana said that the problem of being cheated could be overcome with awareness and when the consumers know their responsibilities and rights.

In case of deficiency of service, the consumers could straight away approach the District Consumers For a. President of District Consumers’ Forum-1 C V Surya Bhaskaram informed that the consumers should obtain the bill/invoice while purchasing goods or services and in
case of inferior quality or deficiency in service, they could approach the forum seeking compensation.

Assistant Food Controller Gouse Moiddin said that usage of carbide to ripen the fruits was strictly prohibited while the Assistant Controller of Legal Metrology P Sudhakar said that the consumers should watch weights and measurements while purchasing commodities.

Assistant Drugs Controller K Rajitha informed that consumers should be careful in purchasing medicines after checking the expiry date and J A Siddique of BSI asked the public to purchase only ISI marked goods.

District Consumers’ Welfare Association president K V Ramana appealed to the authorities to initiate steps allowing consumers to take water bottles with them to theatres.

Later, the Joint Collector gave away prizes to the winners of elocution and essay writing competitions conducted on the occasion.

District Civil Supplies Officer (city) K Nirmalabhai, DSO (rural) Ch Anandkumar and noted consumer rights activist P K Lingeswara Rao were also present.
