Hyderabad: The High Court at Hyderabad has set aside GO MS No 100 dated April 26, 2013 that had fixed the rates for admission into various classes of cinema theatres in the erstwhile united State of Andhra Pradesh and directed both the State governments of AP and Telangana to undertake fresh revision of rates.

Justice Raja Elango passed this order while disposing of a batch of writ petitions filed by managements of theatres in both States complaining that the impugned GO was discriminative in nature and caused severe loss to the exhibitors.

The judge, while setting aside the GO, directed the two governments to constitute committees under the chairmanship of respective Principal Secretaries (Home) to undertake the exercise of revision of rates and it is open to the Principal Secretaries to choose the exhibitors, distributors and others as members of the committees. The Committees must complete the exercise, including framing of Rules under the law by March 30 next year.

The judge, while accepting the need to revise the rates in view of conversion of some of the theatres into multiplexes and advanced infrastructure put in place, however underlined the need for the committees to keep in mind the welfare of the filmgoers also while deciding on the issues.
