Visakhapatnam: The role of scientists is the key for the success of Make in India under which 25 key sectors, which include chemistry, pharma, biotechnology, agriculture were identified, said Samar Roy Chowdhury, in-charge-Skill Development and Management unit, National Centre for Cell Science, Pune while addressing at GITAM University on Wednesday during Indian Chemical Society 53rd annual convention.

Delivering a special lecture on skill development in scientific research-paradigm shifts ‘Make in India’, he said that India is playing a vital role in different sectors of business with the development of new ideas, technologies and skills. He observed that the country has potential young talent with multiple ideas and developing the technology but the outcome of scientific research and its implementation is the society, which is yet to be developed properly.

He said that Make in India is truly focusing on skill development by the researcher on the respective areas to ease of doing business. Indian Chemical Society president Prof RN Prasad presided over the discussion.

The three day convention focused on some interesting discussions like green chemistry, new textile fibres, solar energy utilisation, chemistry and space technology, green chemistry for chemical industries, drug discovery in silico.

Colorant Ltd (Gujarat) president N N Mohapatra in his presentation briefed that the available land for cotton growing is becoming limited because of increasing population and same is the story about polyester and nylon scarcity. The present textile industry is focusing on new materials particularly new fibres mostly 100 per cent organic like bamboo, soya bean and pineapple fibres.

While briefing about chemistry in space Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre Scientist-SF(Rtd) MRR Prasad explained the usage of new materials in launch vehicles and latest reusable launch vehicles test fights.

Top scientists, who served several years in the field of chemistry, Prof P L Majumder, Prof Kuldeep Singh Dhindsa and Prof Saraswathi Kanneganti were honoured by Indian Chemical Society with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
