Kadapa: The State government’s aim to motivate the farming community to install solar agriculture motors in their fields is not yielding good results.
Only 25 per cent of farmers have shown interest to set up solar motors despite they are useful to them in protecting crops from unscheduled power cuts and getting less power charges.
Even, the New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NEDCAP) and Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) did not take efforts to popularise solar agriculture motors among farmers in villages.
Farmers want to continue with old practices for securing water even though dry spell conditions prevail most of the time in Kadapa.
Farmers in 25 mandals have installed 70 solar agricultural motors in their fields. They expressed happiness over the functioning of solar motors.
However, several farmers are not keen to set up solar motors in their farm fields as they lack awareness.
Speaking to The Hans India, a woman farmer, K Geeta Sridevi from Seshampalle village in
Porumamilla mandal, said that solar motors are more beneficial when compared to electrical motors.
“I am able to conduct agriculture operations round-the-clock without depending on government for supplying power,” she added.
She stated that she found maximum increase in yield following availability of adequate water even during summer season.
Another farmer B Sivasankar Reddy of Chennuru village opined that it will be more beneficial to the famers if the government relaxed some norms related to the installation of solar motors as the farmers are facing hurdles to own them.
The State and Central governments are providing a subsidy of Rs 4.35 lakh to the beneficiary if he/she is willing to install solar motors in their farm fields.
The beneficiary has to pay only Rs 55,000 as against the total cost of Rs 4.9 lakh towards solar motors.
SPDCL Superintending Engineer N Subba Raju said that farmers are reluctant to install solar motors despite creating awareness.
However, he opined that more canvassing is needed to influence farmers with the coordinated efforts of NEDCAP, SPDCL and Agriculture
department.
