Guntur: Nadikudi- Srikalahasti railway line would pave way for industrial development in Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore and Chittoor districts.

Union Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu set the foundation stone for 309 km long railway line to be taken up at a cost of Rs 2,298 crore on Friday.

It is expected that the faction-hit Palnadu region would develop with the line. Currently, the farmers in the region are transporting chillies, tobacco, paddy, pulses and vegetables to Hyderabad by trucks and spending thousands of rupees for transport. If this railway line is laid the transportation costs will be vastly reduced.

There are 10 cement companies in Gurazala and Macherla towns, which will benefit from the new line, which is expected to be operational from 2020.. Besides, it is expected that train connectivity will increase between Palnadu and Hyderabad.

Darsi, Podili and Kanigiri, in the backward Prakasam district will get train connectivity and it would help to transport the granite produced in the district. This railway line will reduce distance between Prakasam district and Hyderabad. At present Chennai–Hyderabad trains are going via Guntur city. If this railway line is completed, the trains may go to Hyderabad without touching Guntur city.

Similarly, train connectivity will be useful for development of agro-based industries in Guntur and Prakasam districts. There are about 200 spinning and more than 2,000 ginning mills in Guntur and Prakasam districts. Over 50,000 workers are working in spinning and ginning mills.

When there is no work, the agriculture workers are migrating to Bengaluru for works. If this railway line is laid, they may come to Guntur district to work.

Speaking to The Hans India Guntur district Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Atukuri Anjaneyulu said that Chittoor, Nellore and Prakasam districts would get connectivity with State capital.

“This railway line will be useful for the development of industries and it will boost employment opportunities in future,” he asserted.
