Visakhapatnam: A 45-year-old farmer D Ramarao was burnt alive when his hut caught fire due to a bonfire, on the outskirts of Urada Bodaput village under Hukumpeta police station limits in Vizag Agency on Sunday. The incident came to light only on Monday morning when the villagers saw the hut burnt to ashes.

Sub-Inspector of Hukumpeta P Naga Karthik told reporters that Ramarao along with two others had gone to farm fields on Sunday evening to protect the paddy that was harvested recently. While the two others went to the village for dinner, Ramarao set a bonfire in the small hut to keep himself warm in the cold weather and went to sleep. He was also believed to have consumed alcohol prior to going to bed. While Ramarao was sleeping on a cot in the hut, the fire spread and consumed the hut. Rao was unable to escape from the flames and was burnt to death. Based on the information from the villagers, police registered a case. His two friends who were with him before the accident are being questioned.
