Tirupati: The stage is set for the prestigious 104th Indian Science Congress (ISC) to be held here for five days from Tuesday.

AP and Telangana Governor ESL Narasimhan, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Union Minister for Science and Technology N Harshavardhan will address the inaugural meeting which will start with prayer at 11 am.

According to official sources, the PM will present awards to achievers from various fields of science and technology, special prizes for scientific works done on addressing disability and technology, ISCA (Indian Science Congress Association) awards 2016-17 and release ISC plenary proceedings before his address which will be followed by felicitation of Nobel Laureates attending the meeting. Modi will also interact with scientists attending the Congress.

The university area was brought under security blanket while the Tarakarama Stadium turned into a fortress with tight security making it out of bounds to the public.

Senior police officials were on their toes closely overseeing the security arrangements for the inauguration of the meeting. Six Noble Laureates, including William Esco (USA), Takaaki Kajitha (Japan), Ada E Yonath (Israel), Muhammad Yunus (Bangladesh) and Serge Haroche were among the prominent international scientists participating in the ISC.

The focus of the meeting was ‘Science and Technology for National Development’ while as many as 32 topics were included under five sub-themes of the plenary session, including Societal Needs, National Priorities, Science and Technology for Economic Development, Frontiers of S&T and Higher Education and Collaborative Activities.

More than 12,000 delegates from various institutes such as national laboratories, universities, IITs and IISER are expected to participate in the meeting.

DGP Sambasiva Rao who inspected the security arrangements said that ensuring smooth flow of traffic was the top priority. He said the OCTOPUS, Grey Hounds and AR Forces were deployed for the purpose.
