Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) discussed at length on the feasibility of using LED lights in the city.

It may be recalled that the Conference of Parties (COP-21) held in Paris last month showered appreciation on a presentation made by GVMC.

The LED lighting project presented by GVMC representing India at the working group summit of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) emerged as a role model for other nations.

The LED lighting programme undertaken in the State came in for praise from global bodies such as the World Bank and International Energy Agency (IEA).

In order to save consumption of power, the State government has begun using LEDs which would conserve energy by 45-50 per cent. Presently, LEDs are widely used in towns and cities.

Following the LED bulbs evoking a positive response, the State has decided to fit them in villages too. Naravaripalle, the native village of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu took the lead for replacing 120 normal bulbs with LEDs.

The state stood as a role model for other states in India as Rs 989 crore was saved on power consumption out of nation’s 9,876 crore.

The Chief Minister has decided to conduct an awareness programme on power saving in the upcoming ‘Janma Bhoomi-Maa Vuru’ programme.

The highest number of 95,600 LEDs was fitted in the streets of Visakhapatnam saving 48 per cent power. Rajamahendravaram stands second in the list with 3,017 bulbs.

It is estimated that 165 million units of power could be saved if all the villages in India are fitted with LEDs. Under the UJALA scheme,
