Amaravati: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday sought a fair deal for the State in distribution of the Krishna river waters.

He raised this issue while interacting with HS Haldar, chairman of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB), during the latter’s inspection of the water levels in the Prakasam Barrage. Haldar undertook a similar visit to Pulichintala project upstream the Krishna river on Thursday.

The Board reportedly decided to take up field visits on a fact finding mission involving all the reservoirs and barrages in the river basin following a demand from the Telangana government to take a fresh look at the formulae being followed in the water allocation among the riparian States of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

The Bachhawat Tribunal envisaged water distribution among the riparian States basing on the average availability of water in the last 100 years.

Accordingly, the combined State was entitled 811 tmc ft of water, of which Telangana was allowed to utilize 299 tmc ft.

The Brijesh Kumar tribunal later reduced the base period from 100 years to 65 years, which as per the claim of the AP meted out injustice to it.

Interacting with chairman of KRMB, Naidu said that the Krishna delta was facing serious threat as the State was failing to receive its due from the Krishna river.

He cited the State government’s inability to provide water for irrigation under the Nagarjuna Sagar Project right main canal consecutively for two years. He urged the board to take a wise decision, while looking into the demand of the Telangana.

Naidu said habitations in the river basin falling under AP are facing acute drinking water problem. The Chief Minister, who was on his way to Srikakulam to attend Janmabhoomi programme, took break from his scheduled visit to join the inspection at Prakasam barrage along with the KRMB chairman and member secretary Sameer Chatterjee.

Minister for Water Resources Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao accompanied Haldar during the inspection. Haldar and Sameer inspected the structures of the barrage and storage of water. The team left for Hyderabad after completing the two-day inspection.
